"Our Lady's Altar" was dedicated by
the Vicar General Wadhams. The altar is set in a rich mosaic, that of the Holy Virgin
being presented in "tapestry" work. The canopy is tented in white and gilded
gold. Over the arch which encloses this altar is the painting of the angel announcing the
birth of Christ on the first Christmas eve -- "Gloria in Excelsis Deo". The
letters appear to be backward since the messenger is reading the message. It was the
artist's way of showing the work of angels -- to act as messengers from God. The altar was
a gift of a parishioner, Dr. Edmund O'Callaghan, historian of New York State. |
